WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A man in his 30s died Thursday after falling about 15 feet from a scissor lift while working at the former Palm Beach Mall, said Allan Ortman, spokesman for West Palm Beach Fire Rescue.
Police say Juan Arias, who was born in August, 1974, fell while removing asbestos from the mall on Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard.
He worked for Best-Tec Asbestos Abatement, a company based in Boynton Beach, Ortman said.
A scissor lift is a portable, hydraulic-powered aerial platform used in maintenance and construction.Hazmat units were called to the scene because the man was working with asbestos. Asbestos was found during testing and it is being removed as one of the first phases of the demolition process.
The mall is being demolished to make way for a 1.1 million-square-foot outlet mall.
