WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A 16-year-old Palm Beach Gardens girl is in critical condition after she feel off the back of a vehicle while "car surfing" Thursday night.
The mother of the Hannah Huntoon, the girl who was injured, said the 16-year-old was car surfing on the trunk of a friends car when she fell off the back of the vehicle while it was turning on Gardenia Drive.
Investigators said Huntoon was standing on the trunk of a 2008 Toyota Corolla while Megan Jacobson drove.
Huntoon was rushed to St. Mary's Medical Center suffering severe head trauma.
"The doctors and nurses, they're doing everything they can and we remain hopeful," said Beth Abernethy, aunt of the injured girl.
Abernethy said although her niece is in critical condition, Huntoon is stable.
Until the accident, Huntoon's family and friend were unfamiliar with car surfing.
"It's just shocking. Like you wouldn't expect that a 16-year-old girl is in a coma now just from one incident," said Rebecca Papilsky, a friend of Huntoon.
Fellow Palm Beach Gardens High School dance team members and other friend were gathered outside the Palm Beach Children's Hospital at St. Mary's Medical Center hoping for good news.
Huntoon's friends said they do not know where she got the idea to car surf.
"To me it doesn't seem like some trend or something. This is the first time I've ever heard of somebody personally I know get hurt and it's tragic," said Samantha Stepper, a friend of Huntoon.
Parents of Huntoon's friends said they hope the accident can help others learn a lesson before it is too late.
"Hard way for everybody parents and kids. Sorry that it happened but it's a teaching moment for all of us," said Helene Papilsky, a parent.
Those who have seen Huntoon said she looks better than her condition sounds, but she still is not talking.
"It's going to be a grueling couple of days possible months. So I think that the best thing for the community is to raise awareness," said Abernethy.
The Palm Beach Gardens Police said an investigation is underway.
A spokesperson said the department could not release a report because charges are pending, but would not elaborate any further about pending charges.
