PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - The Palm Beach County Sheriff's office has identified the body of a man pulled from the water near Alternate A1A and Lighthouse Drive in Palm Beach Gardens on Thursday.
Palm Beach Garden Fire Rescue was dispatched around 4:45 p.m. to the dike/dam located north of Richard Road, off of A1A, to assist a man that had been pinned in the dam and submerged underwater for several minutes.
PBSO said the victim, Lance Duffett, 23, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., was recovered after being submerged for over 25 minutes. He was immediately transported to Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
The sheriff's office said Duffett and his friend were wake boarding when suddenly a rush of water caught the victim unexpectedly, and he was pinned below the waterline at the bottom of the dam. His friend attempted to pull the deceased from where he was pinned, but was unsuccessful.
A number of firefighters tried in vain to save the man and received minor injuries during the rescue attempt.
"They were under that water for a pretty good amount of time to try and pull themselves out of that vortex...they were under there a little bit and we had somebody who had a knee injury as well," said Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue Division Chief Keith Bryer.
No foul play suspected.
