JUPITER, Fla. - Some high honors were given to Jupiter motorcycle police officer Bruce St. Laurent. The veteran of the force was stuck and killed during a President Barack Obama motorade last September.
St. Laurent's family and fellow officers went to Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, not knowing that the fallen Jupiter police officer would be so noted in President Obama's speech.
"I am perpetually mindful of the sacrifices that they make for me and my family, for other leaders and visiting dignitaries," said the president. "But never more so than when I was told that Officer St. Laurent was struck and killed by another vehicle while driving his motorcycle as part of my motorcade."
St. Laurent was a 20-year department veteran who lost his life eight months ago on the southbound on-ramp from 45th Street to Interstate 95 in West Palm Beach.
"Just brings back everything that's transpired since last September," said Jupiter Police Sgt. Scott Pascarella.
There are quiet reminders of St. Laurent's passing around the police department; a far cry from the very public honor he received from the president.
"He recognized him very early on in his speech, not after numerous other people were recognized, but he was the first one to be recognized so that meant a lot to us," said Pascarella.
St. Laurent was one of 143 officers nationwide honored in Washington, D.C. All of them were killed in the line of duty over the past year.
"Let us not remember them just for how they died, but also for how they lived," said President Obama.
In September, the Jupiter Police Department will hold it's own ceremony to honor the now two officers lost in the line of duty.
The St. Laurent family was said to be 'touched' by the president's remarks.
