JUPITER, Fla. -- A 20-year-old man accused of hitting two Jupiter police officers with his car this morning during a traffic stop, was a former football star at Dwyer High School in Palm Beach Gardens who got kicked out of Marshall University after he helped rob a pizza deliveryman.
Michael Fleurizard faces charges of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and possession of cocaine and marijuana, Jupiter Police spokesman Sgt. Scott Pascarella said in a press release.
The incident began about 3:30 a.m. after the two officers spotted a black Nissan Altima stopped on Indiantown Road at Military Trail. Officers reported they found Fleurizard asleep at the wheel. When they woke him and began to conduct an investigation to determine if Fleurizard was driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, he fled, striking the officers as he did.
Fleurizard drove east on Indiantown Road and then south on A1A/ U.S. Highway One. Police caught up with him after he crashed the car into a guardrail at the intersection at Northwood Road, Pascarella said.
Both North Palm Beach Police and West Palm Beach Police assisted in the arrest, Pascarella said.
Fleurizard was taken to Good Samaritan Medical Center with minor injuries.
Both officers are reported to have minor injuries. One went to Jupiter Medical Center to receive treatment, Pascarella said,
Fleurizard was a former Dwyer football standout who in 2010 signed to play football at Marshall University in West Virginia.
In August of that year, he and two other freshmen signees robbed a pizza delivery man. TV station WSAZ in West Virginia reported that in October 2010, a grand jury indicted Fleurizard on two counts of first degree robbery and that he pleaded guilty to one count of first degree robbery in April 2011.
Fleurizard spent 20 months in a West Virginia jail before he was released in February of this year, WSAZ reported.
“You’re free to go,” the circuit court judge reportedly told Fleurizard. “The next time I see your name I hope it’s in the newspaper talking about how you made something of your life.”
As of this morning, the most recent picture posted to Fleurizard’s Facebook account has him standing in front of a bail bonds sign with a wad of cash in his hand.
Further details are expected later today.
