JUPITER ISLAND — Authorities arrested six undocumented Brazilian immigrants Sunday who they believe boated to shore from the Bahamas.
Five of the refugees were caught shortly after someone reported suspicious boating activity off Jupiter Island about 10:30 a.m., and a sixth man was captured on the island in the afternoon, said Martin County Sheriff William Snyder.
A boat captain was among the six immigrants taken into custody, Snyder said.
Deputies worked with Jupiter Island police, U.S. Border Patrol and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Snyder said.
Refugees have made at least three attempts at unlawful entry into Vero Beach in 2013. This is the first incident in Martin County this year, authorities say.
