JUNO BEACH, Fla. - The 15,000 employees of NextEra Energy Inc. found out Wednesday afternoon that the company is eliminating 1000 positions, 60 in Florida.
The announcement was made via an email sent by Jim Robo, the company’s president and chief operating officer.
“Great companies don’t stay great by standing still and being average. Great companies strive to get better each and every day, looking forward and leading change. It’s a challenge that our many stakeholders – customers, shareholders and fellow employees, among others – expect us to meet head-on as we look to the future. After all, the drive to continually improve is at the core of who we are,” said Robo in the email.
About 85 percent of the reductions will come through voluntary attrition, elimination of open positions and early retirement, said Marci Grossman, spokeswoman for Florida Power & Light.
She said 160 employees will be laid off, 60 in the company’s Florida region. Of those, 80 people will find out next week that they will lose their jobs.
She didn’t know how many FPL positions will be eliminated or how many of the layoffs will come from FPL.
Jobs will be eliminated at all levels of the organization, from entry level positions to management, Grossman said.
