Authorities have identified a Wellington woman as the driver who died in a single-car fatality on Southern Boulevard this morning.
Marissa B. McKee, 20, died after she crashed her car around 3:38 a.m. while headed westbound on Southern between Jog and Haverhill roads, according to a Palm Beach County Sheriff's traffic homicide report.
According to the report, "for unknown reasons", McKee's 1999 Honda Accord veered sharply to the right after passing through the intersection of Avocado Avenue and began spinning and sliding on the roadway.
The car rolled over and down into a drainage ditch after sliding into the roadside curb and onto the sidewalk.
McKee, who died at the scene, was thrown from her car and landed behind a house, according to the report.
This morning, witnesses at the scene said the violent crash could be heard with detail.
"I heard metal flying and someone told me it was thunder, but it was too much to be thunder," said Linda Salvadore, who heard the crash from her home. "You heard the metal, you heard the breaking of everything ... It was pretty bad."
Fabian Bencomo, who also lives nearby, said he heard a few "big bangs" before he ran outside and saw the woman's car. Because it was dark, Bencomo said he couldn't find the woman at first. He said he thought someone had crashed and left the scene.
"We look back and I see a girl lying (on the ground)," Bencomo said. "She didn't even talk. She was just trying to gasp for air."
