STUART, Fla. - A local rock band is wondering if it has the strength to carry on after one of its members was killed, and another was seriously hurt after their car was hit by a wrong way driver on the interstate.
John Henderson's band Ghost Cat had just finished a show in Lake Worth early Wednesday morning. Three of his bandmates were in one car. He left with his girlfriend in another.
"They left maybe 5 minutes, 10 minutes ahead of me," recalled Henderson from his home in Jensen Beach.
Approaching the Kanner Highway exit in the darkness, he saw a few cop cars and what appeared to be a wreck.
"It was this incredibly eerie feeling driving through it. It's interesting now knowing it was Bryan," said Henderson.
Bryan is bandmate Bryan Jackson. Henderson did not know until this morning that Jackson was killed in a head-on collision.
"Him and I instantly connected. He was one of the most incredible persons I had ever met. He had this humor and this heart. He was so easy to get along with," said Henderson.
That collision was triggered by a pick-up heading the wrong way on the interstate. The driver, 31 year-old Troy Snook of Port St. Lucie, was also killed. Friends say the former Marine had just become a father and was planning to get married next year.
As for Henderson's band, with one member gone, and another bandmate, Karsten Andersen, hospitalized with a broken femur, its future is uncertain, but they did just record some new music.
"I'm really really happy that exists now. It has other meaning at this point," said Henderson.
The Florida Highway Patrol says its investigation continues. Toxicology results are pending.
