STUART — County lifeguards have closed the waters off Bathtub Reef Beach following a suspected shark bite, said Martin County Fire Rescue spokesman Daniel Wouters.

About 4:35 p.m. Friday, lifeguards received a report of a boy bitten by what is suspected to be a shark.

The victim’s age and location of the bite were not available.

The injury is described as minor, Wouters said.

The child was in shallow waters according to Chief John Belding, Martin County Fire Rescue. He said the child was taken to Martin Memorial Hospital.

Lifeguards are flying double red flags and have ordered swimmers out of the water.

The beach will remain closed until Saturday morning.

No further information was available.
