STUART, Fla. - A Treasure Coast group that goes by the name "River of Light" online, is seeking the public's support through the website change.org .
According to the group's Facebook page, "River of Light" is working to raise "awareness of the Lake Okeechobee discharges into the St. Lucie River and estuaries.
The group is behind two petitions on the website change.org .
One of the petitions is titled "Governor Rick Scott: Stop the Lake Okeechobee discharges into the St. Lucie River and Estuaries."
As of Thursday morning, nearly 13,000 people have signed the online petition.
On the site, the group urges the governor to "stop the discharges and pollution now before it is too late!"
The other petition is titled "To The Congress of the United States of America: We Demand that You Stop the Sugar subsidies in the Sept. 2013 Farm Bill."
So far, nearly 900 people have signed the online petition.
The goal of this petition is to stop subsidies to sugar companies located south of Lake Okeechobee. The group behind the petition hopes that if subsidies are stopped, then the sugar companies may move, allowing engineers to build a flow way south of Lake Okeechobee so the water can flow there rather than east and west.
