STUART, Fla. - Police officers blocked off a street in a gated Stuart community Saturday night after investigators said a suicidal man barricaded himself in his home for almost two hours.
911 calls were placed just before 9 p.m., summoning police to Southeast Birmingham Drive in the Lexington Lakes neighborhood.
Mike Pope, a spokesperson for the Stuart Police Department, said resident Bruce Waterbury was threatening to take his own life.
Investigators said Waterbury charged the first officer on the scene with a knife. They said Waterbury then went back inside of his home and would not comply with police orders to exit the residence.
Police said an officer was able to move in on Waterbury inside the garage. The officer used a Taser on Waterbury, who then fell to the ground inside the garage area. He was examined for any medical issues and then transported to jail.
Waterbury, who neighbors said is a father and husband, was alone at the time of the incident. No one else was injured.
