STUART, Fla. - Ruthie and John Sandifer's family was hoping to be able to eat Easter dinner in their newly rebuilt home. Two years ago, a fire destroyed everything they had when the home burned to the ground.
With the assistance of numerous local businesses and community supporters, the home was rebuilt, but now, two things stand in the way of the family receiving their official Certificate of Occupancy by Martin County: a pile of concrete, and two waste bins, all on the home's property.
Both of the Sandifers had health set-backs since the fire. Ruthie had a major stroke, and John was diagnosed with brain tumors.
But since that night she lost everything, seeing everyone step up to help has given Ruthie tremendous gratitude.
"I said, 'Lord, we're homeless'," said Ruthie, reminiscing about the fire. "And I feel like the Lord stepped in right then and said, 'My child, no, you're not!"
