MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. — A 46-year-old Port St. Lucie driver was killed and his passenger was seriously injured in a two-vehicle accident on Kanner Highway west of Interstate 95 Tuesday afternoon, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Steven Ramos died from his injuries at the scene after his Econo Van crossed the center line for unknown reason and struck a dump truck going west on the highway. His vehicle overturned and ended on the south side of Kanner Highway. His passenger, Saydat Sucknanan, 39, is listed in serious condition at St. Mary’s Hospital in Palm Beach County.
The dump truck driver had minor injuries.
The van was traveling east on Southwest Kanner Highway in the area of Southwest Groveside Drive, while the dump truck was headed west, Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Kurt Hardley said.
“For reasons yet to be determined, the work van crossed the center line," Hardley said.
The work van and dump truck collided head on.
Hardley said high winds at the time “may have had something to do with it, but we're not sure.”
Martin County Fire Rescue crews were dispatched at 1:59 p.m. to the incident, and the first unit arrived at 2:11 p.m., said Daniel Harshburger, fire rescue bureau chief and spokesman.
A Martin County Sheriff's deputy blocked off Kanner Highway at Bridge Road. The highway remained closed almost 3 hours after the accident and was reopened about 5 p.m.
