PALM CITY, FLA - Since nine o'clock this morning, workers have been toiling in the fields of Agri-Gator farms, boxing up acres and acres worth of corn.
Every last ear is loaded onto trucks, but its headed somewhere other than your neighborhood grocer.
"We got a phone call from this farmer on Wednesday afternoon. He said that he has a whole bunch of corn that he won't be able to use," said Viviane Filsaime, with C.R.O.S. ministries.
Together with Agri-Gator, they've teamed up for the second year in a row, to combat hunger, with hope, and corn. "They just love helping the less fortunate," said Filsaime.
Now, the field of corn in question took a little bit of damage, during the recent cold snap.
"It almost made it. It was about three days shy of picking when the cold weather hit," said Joe Black,a Farm Manager with Agri-Gators.
The damage from the wintry-weather, means it's impossible to sell.
"No one would have taken it. But they're able to take the time and find some good ears," said Black.
According to Filsaime, it's perfect to feed to the hungry. "Soup kitchens, homeless shelters, food pantries," said Filsaime.
The volunteer labor force also provides a service to the farm.
"Providing the labor to get this done. It would be cut up, mowed, it would just be fallow. It would go to waste," said Black.
It's a waste the friends and members of C.R.O.S. Ministries can't abide.
"We have almost two-hundred thousand people who are hungry. That just doesn't make sense. We're one of the largest agricultural producers," said Kim Hanson, who, though not affiliated with C.R.O.S., decided to donate her Christmas Eve morning, to help shuck some corn.
At the end of the day, over 11,000 pounds of corn was on it's way to fill hungry mouths across Palm Beach County.
"I hope it continues as long as it's needed, and I hope it's not needed long," said Hanson.
