Palm City raccoon tests positive for rabies

A raccoon that fought with a vaccinated dog on May 3 has tested positive for rabies.

The incident occurred on Mayacoo Way in Palm City. This is the first case of rabies in Martin County this year.

The dog will be revaccinated and placed in quarantine for 45 days.

Rabies is a virus that is transmitted from the bite or scratch of a rabid animal. Any mammal can get rabies. The most common carriers of rabies are raccoons, skunks, bats, foxes and coyotes.
