STUART — Three small brush fires, possibly caused by lightning strikes, kept Martin County firefighters busy Saturday afternoon as a powerful thunderstorm moved through the area.
No injuries were reported in any of the blazes, fire officials confirmed.
“I do not have the potential causes on any of these, but I do know we have a lot of lightning in the area right now,” said Martin County Fire Rescue Division Chief Dan Wouters. “That’s going to be our suspicion right now.”
A brush fire that burned an area stretching 100-feet by 100-feet in the woods near Pinelake Gardens and Estates off Southeast Princewood Lane in Stuart caused the biggest concern, Wouters said, as two mobile homes were damaged by radiant heat.
At least 13 units responded to the blaze, including a brush truck.
“It was not a large fire but it was in very close proximity to about four homes in that area,” he said. “We have two structures that have some heat damage to the back of them.”
No homeowners were evacuated, but Wouters said lightning was striking so frequently it forced firefighters battling the blaze to stop and take shelter until the worst of the storm passed by.
“They had lightning striking just a couple of hundred feet from where the firefighters were working,” he said.
Another blaze about 100 feet wide burned a portion of woods off Southeast Lillian Court in Stuart, Wouters confirmed, and a third, smaller blaze sparked an area of woods near Lost Lake Golf Club off Southeast Spicewood Circle in Hobe Sound.
Both were quickly extinguished and no structures were threatened.
