JENSEN BEACH, Fla. - UPDATE: Brush fire has been contained, according to Martin County Fire Rescue.
It took Martin County firefighters several hours to extinguish a brush fire that erupted Thursday afternoon off Jensen Beach Boulevard in The Pines subdivision of Jensen Beach, said Chief Doug Killane, spokesman for fire rescue.
About 1.5 acres burned for several hours between Sunflower Place and Tulip Way. Because the fire was near homes, the department requested additional units and the assistance of the Florida Forestry Service, which sent a tractor to help contain the fire, Killane said.
The fire is believed to have started around 3 p.m., Killane said. He said the cause of the fire is not known, but that they have ruled out lightning as the cause.
