JENSEN BEACH, Fla. - Over 1,500 people packed St. Martin De Porres Catholic church to honor Kyle Conrad, Saturday.
Conrad was a star midfielder at Lynn University, and twice named an ESPN Academic All-American, including this year.
But Sunday, it was not about the athlete, it was about Kyle the person.
"Kyle was nothing short of amazing in everything he ever did, and the outpouring of people that are here today just shows how many people he touched along the way," said Kyle's aunt, Lori Andrews.
It has been a week since the tragic incident in Fort Lauderdale when Conrad and his best friend and teammate Joe Cundall were taking a shortcut to a party. They were almost to the end of a railroad bridge when it started to rise and they were trapped.
Conrad fell into the water, he was pronounced dead hours later.
His friend managed to hold on until help arrived.
"It is definitely a blow, we lost a role model, we lost a friend, we lost a teammate," said Paul Meunier, Kyle's High school track coach.
Kyle's family hopes his memory lives on with those who had the privilege to know him.
"Whether it was at church or a school or with his friends, every person that knew Kyle, even if they only met him once, felt like they knew him forever and had a bond with him, that brings them here today, to just have that last goodbye because they loved him and he loved everybody as well," said Andrews.
The family is planning another memorial service that will take place Sunday at 12:00 p.m. at Jensen Beach High School.
