JENSEN BEACH, Fla. - Family and friends of Kyle Conrad are preparing a water memorial for him. “To get something like this done in such a short period of time is just spectacular,” said Chris Wigley, a long-time friend of the Conrad family.
Wigley said Kyle loved the water and spent hours fishing and diving. The Jensen Beach community along with the Martin County Angler Club Reef Fund raised money to purchase a tugboat in memory of Kyle for an artificial reef project.
“We've had all the permitting done. The boat is at Harbour Town Marina now. Weather permitting we're gonna try to scuttle that boat,” said Wigley.
The boat sinking event is set to take place Monday between 11am and noon.
Kyle graduated from Jensen Beach High School and went on to become a star soccer player at Lynn University. The 21 year old died December 11th after falling from a bridge in Fort Lauderdale.
“What a great memorial to Kyle and a great legacy for him and his family both to have a place that will be on charts permanently...Coast Guard charts for permanent record and that will be out there in the ocean for a lot longer than we'll be around,” said Wigley.
The vessel will become Martin County's newest artificial reef
The site will be named the Kyle Conrad Memorial Artificial Reef. The reef will be located roughly 10 miles east of the Saint Lucie Inlet.
