HUTCHINSON ISLAND, Fla. -- A young teen struck by a vehicle on Hutchinson Island died Wednesday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
A preliminary report suggested the teen had been struck while riding a bicycle.
However, an FHP investigation revealed that the teen, identified as 13-year-old James McHenry, was crossing the street with a friend when struck.
The accident happened around 7:25 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of 10971 South Ocean Boulevard and Aqua Ra Drive.
McHenry, who was visiting from Alpharetta, Georgia, was taken by air ambulance to Martin Memorial Hospital North where he was pronounced dead, according to the FHP.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as Paul George Smuts, 73, or Jensen Beach.
McHenry was on vacation with another family and staying at a Marriott Courtyard hotel.
