MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. - A couple of accused Jensen Beach meat swipers appear to have been caught red-handed after being spotted stuffing steaks in their trousers.
A woman working January 4 in the meat department of a Publix in the 3300 block of Southeast Federal Highway in Stuart told a Martin County Sheriff's deputy she saw two men walking up to the meat case.
The men, later identified as Jesse Mcfalls, 22, and 23-year-old Dante Costello, grabbed some rib eye and New York Strip steaks, according to recently released records. They walked down aisle 11 and "put the meats down their pants."
If wasn't known if the woman working in the meat department grilled the men or verbalized any searing accusations. She did take steps to notify loss prevention officials.
A store manager told a deputy he was called to the store's south entrance to look for the two men. He said he saw them "concealing the meat," which is a key ingredient in meatballs and meat loaf.
Mcfalls had the bovine flesh under his jacket, while Costello had two packs of steaks in his pants.
The men apparently were not thrown a bone and let go. Rather, they were arrested and taken to the Martin County jail.
Mcfalls and Costello, both of Jensen Beach, each were arrested on a retail theft charge. Mcfalls also was arrested on a false name to a law enforcement officer charge.
It wasn't immediately clear whether the men had plans to prepare the steaks, which sometimes are paired with lobster in a "surf and turf" combo.
