INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, Fla. - A woman who died of injuries from a single-boat accident Saturday night near Captain Hiram’s Resort was the wife of Highlands County Commissioner Jeff Carlson, who was driving the boat.
Julie Carlson, 39, died at Holmes Regional Medical Center on Sunday after hitting a piling or sign about 100 yards east of the Capt. Hiram’s Resort on the Indian River Lagoon.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the case. “There was evidence of alcohol in the boat” cans and bottles, said commission spokeswoman Joy Hill.
They had been at Capt. Hiram’s and left at 10 p.m. Saturday. The 22-foot boat accelerated and then struck a piling with a glancing blow that made Julie Carlson hit the piling or sign.
The boat quickly returned to the dock for help.
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Brian S. Noethlic and Annie R. Noethlic of Sebring were occupants on the vessel.
The Highlands County Commission’s Tuesday board meeting was canceled because of the death.
