— The woman who was critically injured by a shark bite last week has been flow back to Germany for continuing medical treatment, officials said Monday.

German resident Karin Stei, 47, was bitten about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in a near-fatal attack that nearly severed one leg as she swam in the ocean off the Driftwood Resort in Vero Beach.

She was flow to Fort Pierce's Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute for surgery. Her condition stabilized to the point that on Sunday, she was taken by ambulance to Miami and then was flown to Germany accompanied by a German doctor, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Stei is a resident of Germany's Lake Constance area and works for a local newspaper there. She was staying with an friend in Vero Beach when she was attacked.
