INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A deputy on foot patrol saved a woman and her infant from a burglar who tried to prevent them from escaping Wednesday, the Indian River County Sheriff's Office said.
Domonique Sharad Allen, 23, of the 1800 block of Woodland Circle, Vero Beach, was charged with burglary of an occupied dwelling with battery. He was being held at the Indian River County Jail without bail Wednesday.
The Sheriff's Office said Allen broke into a home in the 1500 block of 20th Avenue Southwest, Vero Beach, about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. A woman and her child were inside sleeping, the Sheriff's Office said. She told deputies she woke up and saw the intruder standing over her bed.
Allen tried to get on top of the woman, but she jumped out of the bed, grabbed her infant and fled to the front door, the Sheriff's Office said. Allen followed closely behind and grabbed the woman at the door, according to a Sheriff's Office statement.
At the same time, Deputy Danny Hatch was on foot patrol in the neighborhood and heard the woman screaming, he said. When he went to the home, he saw Allen pulling the woman's hair and attempting to bring her back in the house. She was still holding her baby, Hatch said. When Allen saw the deputy, he stopped and surrendered, the deputy said.
The woman, who told deputies she did not know Allen, was being evaluated for injuries Wednesday morning.
The case remained under investigation Wednesday.
