VERO BEACH — A 16-year-old Port St. Lucie girl who was knocked unconscious and almost drowned in a personal watercraft accident near the Moorings on Saturday remained in critical condition on Monday at the Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The name of the girl isn't being released because of her age.

She was driving a Waverunner with two other juveniles on it about 2 p.m. in the Indian River Lagoon when it hit a wave and all three where thrown off. Somehow the watercraft hit her, causing a skull fracture. There were no other watercraft in the area, said commission spokesman Lenny Salberg, "and there is no evidence they were wake (wave) jumping."

Other people at the scene came to her aid and she was flown from the St. Edward School football field. The two other juveniles weren't injured, Salberg said.

According to Salberg, the injured girl and her two passengers are friends through soccer.

The Waverunner is designed to accommodate three people and in Florida people ages 14 and older may operate a personal watercraft. All three youths in the accident were wearing life jackets, he said.
