VERO BEACH, Fla. - Indian River County Fire Rescue called off the search for a swimmer reported missing Thursday morning off Jaycee Beach Park, Fire Marshal Brian Nolan said.
Divers, lifeguards and a helicopter from the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office searched for four hours without finding anyone in the water or verifying that anyone had been in any danger, Nolan said. The search was called off at 2 p.m.
Harvey Niblack, a retired Vero Beach resident and a U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary member, said he observed the swimmer for about an hour before the person disappeared around 9:30 a.m. The person appeared to be wearing a black wet suit and was snorkeling near the southern part of the beach about 200 yards offshore, he said. Niblack contacted the Coast Guard about 15 minutes after he saw the person disappear, he said.
