VERO BEACH, Fla. - Indian River County sheriff’s deputies have charged a 64-year-old man with two counts of capital sexual battery in a case they say involves a 7-year-old girl.
Marion Wayne Wheelus of Vero Beach was being held without bail Friday at the Indian River County Jail , according to jail records.
The girl’s grandparents called authorities Feb. 8 after the girl told them she had been inappropriately touched by Wheelus, the affidavit states.
About six months earlier, the child had told them about a similar event, but at the time, her class was learning what to do if inappropriate touching happened and her grandparents thought the lesson had suggested the idea, it states.
The Florida Department of Children and Families investigated the allegation and reported “positive findings,” the affidavit states.
Wheelus was arrested Wednesday.
