VERO BEACH — Police are investigating an armed robbery of the Florida Community Bank, formerly First Peoples Bank, in the 4000 block of 20th Street that happened about 10 a.m. Tuesday.
The suspect was described as a black male who is 5 feet 5 inches tall and 150 lbs. He was wearing a white hooded sweatshirt, gray sweatpants and was carrying a black backpack. The suspect also wore a ski mask and displayed a firearm, police Capt. Keith Touchberry said.
According to police the man demanded money from the teller drawer. He walked to the teller area and took an undisclosed amount of cash and stashed it in his backpack.
He then left on foot.
Vero Beach Police officers were being assisted by Indian River County Sheriff's Office deputies and helicopter and a Sebastian Police Department search dog.
Police notified Rosewood Elementary School, which is a few blocks away, about the search. No official lockdown was put into place, the Indian River County School District said.
