INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — County emergency officials have increased their assessment of the damage from Tropical Storm Isaac's tornado to $1 million from Monday's estimate of $500,000.

"When you're running around, looking through the rain, it's hard to make firm judgments," Chief Deputy Property Appraiser Mickey Umphrey said late Thursday.

He said the tornado damaged 118 mobile homes in the Vero Palm Estates and Countryside communities, plus 15 single-family homes in the Paradise Park subdivision.

The county Emergency Services Department is expected to review the latest figures Tuesday, he said, and make changes before they are submitted to state and federal officials for possible recovery aid.
