Forestry helicopters assisted local firefighters with a 350-acre brush fire south of County Road 512 near 83rd and 85th streets in Fellsmere.
According to the Florida Forest Service, the fire moved towards homes, and flames were about 20 feet away at one point.
Indian River County Fire Rescue set up 'structure protection' around the houses.
Forestry spokeswoman Melissa Yunas says rain moved in and the wind died down enabling state and county firefighters to save home from the flames.
The fire is currently 95 percent contained.
According to Indian River Red Cross, members are on scene supporting fire rescue crews battling the fire. They are set up on 81 Street and 512 in Fellsmere. Indian River Red Cross is in touch with Emergency Management monitoring the situation. Shelters are on stand-by at this time.
