INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — One man is in custody and two are sought after all three fled authorities near Dodgertown Elementary School at 43rd Avenue about 10 a.m. Thursday, the Indian River County Sheriff's Office said.
The driver ignored the flashing lights of a Florida Highway Patrol trooper and a Sheriff's Office deputy who each tried to pull his car over in separate attempts. The driver crashed the red Nissan Altima in the middle of wooded acreage south of the school in the 4200 block of 38th Avenue, Sheriff's Sgt. Thom Raulen said.
The crash caused a brush fire that sent smoke flowing north through the Dodgertown campus. Indian River County Fire Rescue extinguished the blaze.
One suspect was apprehended at 10:30 a.m. Deputies were continuing the search as of 12:30 p.m. for the remaining suspects in the wooded area.
Deputies also were positioned at the school.
One of the men who bailed from the car was described as having dreadlocks and was wearing a green shirt.
