UPDATE: The Florida Highway Patrol has re-opened I-95.
SEBASTIAN — Conditions deteriorated Thursday morning, bringing smoke from a control burn across Interstate 95 in north Indian River County. The Florida Highway Patrol closed north and southbound I-95 between Sebastian and Palm Bay at 6:45 Thursday morning.
I-95 is closed between mile markers 156 and 173. Motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes.
Earlier Thursday, winds were blowing just the smells of burned woodlands into northern Indian River County from a 700-acre fire that state officials started in southern Brevard County on Tuesday.
The fire burned dead vegetation and clear woodlands in a section of the St. Sebastian River Preserve State Park north of the C-54 Canal, according to a Florida Forestry Service official. The park periodically burns sections of its lands to reduce the possibility of a wildfire breaking out and spreading.
