GIFFORD, Fla. - INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Detectives said Saturday they were continuing to investigate Friday’s homicide in Gifford and trying to verify whether a gunman is still at large.
The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office said Dwight Snaith, 38, of St. Lucie County, died after being shot Friday at a home in the 4500 block of 33rd Avenue in the Gifford community.
Another man, 27-year-old Tyrell Bennett of Vero Beach, was being treated for a gunshot wound to the groin at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce, Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Thom Raulen said. Bennett has stabilized since he arrived at Lawnwood in critical condition, Raulen said. No information was available about whether Bennett had been able to speak with investigators.
Witnesses told detectives Snaith and Bennett were in an argument earlier Friday, possibly concerning two women. Snaith went to the Gifford home to confront Bennett, the Sheriff’s Office said. Shots were fired about 4:40 p.m.
Investigators have not said who fired the shots that killed Snaith and wounded Bennett.
Investigators did not say whether they could make any connections between Friday’s shooting and a series of violence that happened in Gifford earlier this year.
