INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, Fla. - During a news conference Thursday, Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar described recaptured inmate Rondell Reed's new living circumstances.

Reed was transported back to Indian River County jail by U.S. Marshals Thursday morning from the Palm Beach County Jail where he had been held overnight. Following his escape from the Indian River County Jail, Reed led investigators on lengthy manhunt, which ended in Ohio when he was arrested.

Sheriff Loar says Reed will spend the coming days under 24-hour observation in a small solitary cell. The lights will be on 24 hours a day and his actions will be documented every fifteen minutes. Leviticus Taylor, who escaped with Reed but was recaptured hours later, is under similar circumstances.

While Reed waits to be seen before a judge on his continuing first degree murder charges and new pending escape charges, he will be limited in the activities he is allowed to be involved. He will receive health evaluations.

When Reed left Indian River County in his escape, he weighed 180 pounds. According to Sheriff Loar, he is now 165 pounds, having lost 15 pounds in two-and-a-half weeks.

Loar describes Reed as a well-traveled criminal who is used to eluding the law. "His luck has run out," the sheriff said.

The cost of Reed's escape and recapture is currently being calculated. An internal review of jail workers' actions is currently ongoing and it is unclear at this time if any workers will face consequences. The sheriff revealed soon after Reed's escape that cell bed "flesh checks" may not have been thorough enough to notice Reed and Taylor's disappearance for hours after they had departed the jail.

Sheriff Loar says he is relieved to have Reed back in custody and that lessons have been learned.
