WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A 25-year-old man accepted a 10-year prison sentence this morning as part of a plea deal in a case where police say he agreed to help a friend orchestrate a home invasion robbery that left the friend and his roommate trapped in a burning house.
Olaya Nayard, of West Palm Beach, was arrested on attempted murder, kidnapping and arson charges in March 2010, after police say Angel De Leon enlisted him to stage a robbery so they could steal cash, jewelry and electronic equipment from De Leon's roommate, Bartolo Sap Garcia.
Police say Nayard and an accomplice tied up Garcia and De Leon to keep Garcia from suspecting De Leon was part of the plot. One of the thieves then set fire to part of the house at 412 Plymouth Road in West Palm Beach.
Garcia and De Leon were eventually able to escape the blaze, but had to be hospitalized and treated for second- and third-degree burns.
DeLeon in March was sentenced to a year in jail, and three years' probation on robbery and false imprisonment charges.
