WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A Palm Beach Gardens teen who lost part of her leg in a boating incident last weekend continues to improve.
Doctors at Saint Mary’s Medical Center upgraded Gabby DeSouza’s condition to stable. They had to remove part of her right leg below the knee this week. Witnesses say Gabby and another girl were trying to climb into someone’s boat at Juno Beach when a wave knocked her into the boat’s propeller.
Her family says Gabby is now off her ventilator and is sitting up, eating and talking. She’ll still be in the intensive care unit for a few more days.
Her family and friends held a prayer vigil for her on Sunday night in the courtyard of St. Jude Catholic Church at 204 North U.S. Highway 1 in Tequesta.
Gabby’s uncle, John Whalen, who is a Coral Springs firefighter, has set up an account to help with her medical expenses. If you would like to help, you can make a donation in the name of Gabriella Desouza c/o Coral Springs Professional Firefighters Benevolent Association, PO Box 9665, Coral Springs, FL 33075.
