WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- A teen was found in the middle of a road with multiple gunshot wounds Monday morning, according to West Palm Beach police.

Officers arrived at the Piper's Village West apartment complex, located near 36th Street and Australian Avenue,  before 6:30 a.m and found the 17-year-old victim.

Police said the teen was leaving the complex on his way to class at Palm Beach Lakes High School when he was confronted by another teen whom they believe was also 17-years-old.

"Someone approaches him (the victim) from the rear, calls him, says 'hey' something like that, he sees a guy with a handgun, he takes off running, he runs down the street, chased by the guy with the handgun, ultimately shot multiple times," said West Palm Beach Police spokesman Allen Ortman.

The wounded teen was rushed to St. Mary's Medical Center. He is expected to survive.

Police say they have a description of the gunman.
