WEST PALM BEACH — Prosecutors are asking a judge to sentence polo mogul John Goodman to 20 years in prison Friday on a DUI manslaughter conviction in the death of 23-year-old Scott Wilson.
Assistant State Attorney Ellen Roberts filed the sentence recommendation late Thursday ahead of what is expected to be Goodman's sentencing hearing Friday afternoon. In her 8-page memo, Roberts blasted Goodman's actions on the night his Bentley crashed into Wilson's Hyundai, sending the 23-year-old engineer's car into a canal where he drowned.
"What Goodman allegedly did for [the sport of] polo, maybe Scott Wilson would have done for science," Roberts wrote. "The world will never know because of Goodman's sense of self-preservation."
Goodman's sentencing will go forward as scheduled Friday unless Circuit Judge Jeffrey Colbath decides to throw out Goodman's conviction based on published revelations from a juror who said he conducted his own drinking test the night in March before he and five other jurors began deliberating Goodman's case.
