Prosecutor OKs Goodman bond deal

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - — Wellington polo mogul John Goodman remains in jail even as the wheels of justice turned Monday so he could be released on a $7 million bond.

Prosecutor Ellen Roberts said she signed off on a proposed court order that spells out the complex and expensive terms that would allow Goodman to return to his home at the International Polo Club Palm Beach while his attorneys appeal his DUI manslaughter conviction.

The order hadn't been filed late Monday. Even after it is signed by Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Jeffrey Colbath, Goodman will have to come up with $3 million and his brother and sister the remaining $4 million.

Also, he has to line up off-duty police to watch him around the clock, another term of his release.

"I'm sure it's going to take them a while to liquidate assets," Roberts said.

Colbath on Friday handed Goodman a 16-year prison sentence. He approved the multi-faceted bond deal in concept but told attorneys to put it in writing for his approval.

Goodman has been in the Palm Beach County Jail since March 23, when he was convicted in the 2010 crash that killed 23-year-old Scott Wilson.

Wilson drowned after Goodman's Bentley slammed into and then pushed Wilson's Hyundai into a canal. Goodman didn't call 911 for nearly an hour.
