PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- The Palm Beach County Sheriff's K-9 deputy that was shot Monday evening is sedated and stitched up at Pet Emergency and Referral Service and continues to receive treatment.
A veterinarian at the center on Northlake Boulevard in Palm Beach Gardens says the dog is "stable" but still recovering.
The Sheriff's Office said the nine-year-old German Shepherd with a black coat had to undergo emergency surgery after being shot three times in the Casa del Monte mobile home park in suburban West Palm Beach. His name has not been confirmed.
Deputies say the dog received three wounds in the upper torso. As of Tuesday morning, two bullets have been removed, according to Sheriff Ric Bradshaw.
The suspected shooter is accused of killing his girlfriend and then shooting a deputy. In the end, authorities say a deputy shot and killed him.
A Sheriff's Office spokesman says one bullet in the dog's body will have to stay put for right now.
Deputies comforted each other outside the pet hospital Monday night. At least 20 law enforcement vehicles were in the parking lot at one point.
K-9 members from other agencies came out to offer their support. This is a highly emotional experience for them because their dogs are not only their partners, but also their family members.
Veterinarians observed the K-9 over Monday night. The veterinarian at the hospital says it is unclear if the K-9 will be released Tuesday.
