WEST PALM BEACH, FLA -  A few weeks ago Crazy, a five year old German shepherd, was shot by a neighbor.

Crazy's family did what it could, but without a large amount of cash, Crazy's prognosis was grim.

"Every person that we called, for animal rescue, if you don't have the money, you're going to have to put it to sleep.  I don't want to do that.  I've had that dog since she was a baby.  I don't want to do that to my dog ," said Pablo Hernandez, Crazy's owner.

Delray Beach philanthropist Arthur Benjamin helped the family out. That led to a meeting with Eve Van Engel and her group Paws 2 Help.

"It's a bare-bones, low-budget center, but the dogs are well cared for, the cats are well cared for, and that's all we want to see that they get the help they need," said Benjamin.

Impressed by the quality of services offered to those unable to afford expensive vet bills, Benjamin decided to get involved.  "We donated 5,000 dollars to start a fund.  It's a matching grant.  They're raising 5-thousand dollars, and together they'll be ten-thousand dollars to start the candy-fund," said Benjamin, whose own organization, American Dog Rescue, is helping to fund this special offer.

According to Eve, the "candy-fund" will be there to help those with emergency vet needs, but lacking the funds to pay for them.

"We can take it from the fund and save the life of the animal, and then they'll have to pay it back to us as they can, on an honor basis," said Van Engel.

Now, the only thing standing in the way, is a lack of donations.  "For the really hard hit...the "candy fund" is there to help," said Benjamin.

Paws 2 Help has until December 27th to match the $5,000 dollar donation.  If you would like to help, go to their website at paws2help.org.
