WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Future creators of high tech visual effects in major motion pictures will soon come from the West Palm Beach area with Digital Domain Institute about to launch its Bachelor of Fine Arts program.
The Digital Domain Institute and Florida State University have teamed up to create the school that will specialize in animation and digital arts.
Saturday, the school held a spring fair to get students interested in joining the new program that will begin in August.
"I think it's an amazing thing," Martin County High School Senior Geoffrey Lehn said. "It's fantastic what (the creators) do. It's really interesting because these are people that do films and I've always wanted to see them."
Lehn and dozens others who attended the fair watched demonstrations from visual effect artists for movies like Real Steel and Star Wars Saturday.
It was an opportunity for prospective students to get a glimpse of work they would learn how to do if they attended the new program.
"Seeing the movies that are coming out in the 21st century now, it's really cool," Lehn said. "Seeing how they design everything is great."
For his parents, a plus is that the program would be based in West Palm Beach though it's affiliated with Florida State University because it is close to their Palm City home.
"It is very convenient, I love it. It helps my mom out so I don't go that far. It can help calm her down," Lehn joked.
The newfound location is also close to Digital Domain Studios on the Treasure Coast, which will allow students to get hands on experience, Jonathan Teaford of the Digital Domain Institute said.
"It teaches kids what they need to know to get jobs in our industry," he said. "We're giving them a chance to work on large feature films as a part of their internship while being in the program here."
The fact that the students will work on major motion pictures like Thor, Real Steel and X-Men is what Teaford said separates their program from others.
