WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - For the first time, the MDA muscle walk has a muscle run to go with it.
More than a hundred runners ran the 5K at Dreher Park on Sunday, but only one did the race in a wheelchair.
For a little more than three miles, Ed Reischenberg pushed his 14-year-old son Corey through the course.
"Worked up a little sweat," Reischenberg said about the run. "It's tougher with him, no lie, but it's alright. It's good. Better with him than without."
Duschenne muscular dystrophy has weakened Corey's muscles since he was three-years-old.
Just a few years ago, they became so weak, he started needing a wheelchair.
"Everyday it has it's challenges," Corey's mom Randy said. "As a mother, as a wife and it's hard on the family."
The challenges also provide inspiration for the family.
All the immediate family members as well as other members joined their walk through the Palm Beach Zoo.
"Everyone is better people because of him so it really gives an impact on the community because even people here, they see him and he's what we're running for," his sister Alana said.
About 400 participated in the MDA walk at the Palm Beach Zoo.
Together they're pushing to help the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) in the fight against the disorder.
The organization is expecting to raise $80,000 with the event, which they said stays in local programs.
Elise Qvale is the camp director for the MDA and she said it helps the organization purchase equipment, do clinic visits, have summer camp for kids like Corey and more.
Not to mention it helps with research, which parents and relatives hope leads to a cure.
"We are very close. We are just around the corner that's why days like today are so important," Reischenberg said. "We don't want to have to let another boy die because of this terrible disease."
Qvale said this year donations are down compared to last years walk, but she said the turnout was higher.
