West Palm Beach, Fla. - Many local people and agencies are spending the Martin Luther King holiday volunteering their time and energy around the community.
On Monday, students and staff from Palm Beach Atlantic University are observing the holiday as a "day on, not off."
From 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., volunteers projects with PBA will take place throughout Palm Beach County.
Volunteers will split their time at a Block Party at Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church as well as at the Quantum House, the Palm Beach Zoo and Safe Harbor Animal Rescue.
The United Way of Palm Beach County is seeking volunteers to help out with two projects in West Palm Beach.
Volunteers are needed to help sort donated clothes at Seagull Industries Thrift Store from 8:30 a.m. until noon. Latex gloves will be provided.
Also, volunteers are needed at Seagull Industries to paint blackboards from 9 a.m. until noon. Seagull Industries helps local disabled people.
There are other events taking place in our area, aside from volunteer projects.
The Spady Museum in Delray Beach is hosting its annual breakfast in honor of Dr. King. The event starts at 8 a.m., at the Delray Beach Golf Club. The event costs $30 and includes a full breakfast buffett and beverages.
In Lake Worth, the city is hosting its 19th Annual Candlelight March through the downtown area. The march will feature people of all ages, including veterans of the civil rights movement. Church and school groups will also be represented in the march. Those taking part in the walk through downtown Lake Worth are asked to gather at City Hall at 5 p.m. The parade will travel down Lake Avenue to the MLK "Ball" Memorial.
A Fellowship Dinner is planned to follow the march in Lake Worth. It'll take place at First Baptist Church, off of 2nd Avenue South and M Street.
In Belle Glade, a parade will take place at 10 a.m. in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The theme of the parade is “Honoring the Dream through Soul Music.” Those participating in the parade are asked to line up at 9 a.m. on the east side of Lake Shore Middle School. The school is located at 425 W. Canal Street North. The parade ends at the loading ramp on Southwest Fifth Street. A memorial service will follow the parade.
