— A man believed to be in his mid 50s was killed this evening after he was struck by a train, city police said.

The accident occurred shortly before 8 p.m. on the Florida East Coast tracks in the 5900 block of Greenwood Avenue. The man was trying to cross the tracks from east to west, city police spokesman Allan Ortman said.

The man paused to wait for a northbound train to pass. He then walked across the tracks and stepped into the path of a southbound freight train, Ortman said.

Police have made a tentative identification, but are withholding the man's name until his family has been notified, Ortman said.
