WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - He is a living legend that may be forced to exit.
Penn State University head footbal coach Joe Paterno may be sidelined permanently soon, according to media reports, as the uproar grows over allegations that one of his former assistant coaches sexually abused boys for years.
Penn State trustees decided Tuesday night to appoint a special committee to investigate the matter.
Coach Chris Kokell at Forest Hill Community High School said that while Penn State University doesn't typically recruit out of Florida it is hard to ignore their dominance and legacy in football.
A legacy he says is now being tarnished.
Kokell says the unfolding sexual abuse scandal at PSU is all the talk among fellow coaches.
"What's happened up there is a travesty," he said.
Former PSU defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was arrested last Saturday.
He is charged with sexually abusing eight boys over 15 years. At least one alleged assault happened in the football building showers.
Legendary 84-year-old Penn State Coach Joe Paterno and his university president are accused of doing too little upon learning in 2002 about the allegations.
Paterno's supporters say he alerted his university superiors. But detractors say neither he nor administrators contacted police.
Paterno taddressed supportive fans and students outside his home Tuesday.
"I know you guys have a lot of questions, and I was hoping I was going to be able to answer them today. But we'll try to do it soon. Soon as we can." he said.
Cauley Patrick often watches from the stands at Forest Hill while his grandson, a freshman, practices. Patrick says he has watched the PSU scandal play out on TV and trusts the school will overcome it.
"That school has too much tradition to let this stuff go on," said Patrick.
But Coach Kokell said he believes the scandal has chipped away at Paterno's legacy.
"I won't watch a game, I won't support it in any way," says Kokell.
