SUBURBAN WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A Quarter horse and two riders survived a plunge into a deep canal in suburban West Palm Beach Friday evening, said Capt. Albert Borroto, spokesman for Palm Beach County Fire Rescue.
Special Operations crews, carrying specialized equipment for large animal rescues, responded around 7 p.m. to reports that a horse and two riders had fallen into the main canal running parallel to Southern Boulevard near Gun Club and Jog Road.
Upon arrival they found the riders and the horse had managed to get out of the canal and up the steep bank to safety, Borroto said.
The Special Operations units routinely train on how to safely rescue and handle large animals such as horses, Borroto said. He said the crews had recently participated in an all-day training session on how to handle horses safely.
