Historic home is relocated from one end of West Palm Beach to the other

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - It's "Home Sweet Home" for a historic home in West Palm Beach as it was moved to its new address Sunday.

Shortly after 7 a.m., a 36-hundred square foot Mission style home began its journey to the other side of town through the city streets.

Its destination: the 12-hundred block of Florida Avenue in the Grandview Heights Historic District.

The house was supposed to be demolished until a young couple volunteered to save the historic home from its fateful end. They offered to pay for the home's relocation, as well as future rehabilitation, says Elliot Cohen, spokesman for the City of West Palm Beach.

"It is exciting to see another success story for historic preservation and sustainability in West Palm Beach.  Anytime we can recycle an historic house it keeps construction waste out of the landfill and adds to the charm of our rich and diverse neighborhoods.  This house will fit in perfectly with the homes on Florida Avenue and give future generations an opportunity to enjoy the great architecture of the 1920's," said Friederike Mittner, City Historic Preservation Planner with the City of West Palm Beach.

Local residents were warned that they may experience a temporary loss of power during the move, as FPL crews removed lines to make room for the house to pass by.
