WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Layoffs due to the federal government shutdown could have an even greater impact on Palm Beach County as early as Monday October 7th.
United Technologies' Sikorsky Aircraft, the makers of the Black Hawk helicopter, have announced that it will furlough 2,000 workers in its West Palm Beach, Stratford Connecticut , and Troy Alabama facilities.
The company says that if the shutdown continues through the end of next week the furloughs will double to 4,000 and could exceed 5,000 if it continues until next month.
Sikorsky Aircraft issued the following statement about the shutdown:
'The production and delivery of Sikorsky helicopters for the Department of Defense cannot proceed without the help of our valued Defense Contract Management Agency (DCMA) partners who have been furloughed due to the government shutdown. DCMA personnel are a critical and required part of our U.S. Government aircraft and parts inspection, acceptance, and delivery processes.'
Sikorsky says that it will update its website as conditions change.
